Glucose tolerance factor chromium, more commonly called GTF chromium, is a mineral with hormone-like qualities. Chromium plays a key role in metabolism by helping to regulate blood sugar. When blood sugar levels increase after a meal and insulin is released, chromium helps to bind insulin molecules to sites in body where the insulin can remove sugar (glucose) from the bloodstream and transport it into your cells where the sugar will be used for energy.*
While chromium is most notably recognized for its roles in maintaining the proper storage of carbohydrates, proteins and fats, it also offers cardiovascular support by helping to increase levels of good HDL cholesterol.*
Why is GTF Chromium superior to regular chromium?
Chromium supplements typically come in two forms – chromium picolinate and GTF chromium.
Chromium that comes from the diet has a naturally low absorption rate, and it doesn’t help that chromium content in the industrialized food supply has decreased due to poor soil levels and loss during the refining process. We also tend to lose our ability to absorb chromium as we age.*
GTF chromium is more easily absorbed in the body over other simplified chromium compounds because it’s derived in a way that creates organically bound chromium readily available for the body to use. The fermentation process of a pure culture of baker’s yeast (Sacharomyces cerevisiae) undergoes a process that is similar to how plants in the wild bind minerals into membrane and protein structures. This yields an end product that has 20-50 times more GTF chromium than other whole food sources of chromium.*
The non-pathogenic S. cerevisiae cells in GTF Chromium are dead or inactive, and only the nutritional properties remain. The yeast cells cannot reproduce in the human body when consumed because they are no longer alive.*
