Vitamin A is one of the fat-soluble vitamins. It’s widely praised for supporting good vision, especially in low light conditions (night vision), but vitamin A also plays key roles in normal cell growth and development, which is important for maintaining healthy skin, mucus membranes, soft tissues, and the skeletal frame.
Vitamin A is made up of two distinct nutrient families: retinoids and carotenoids. Retinoids are found in animal sources, while carotenoids are found in plant sources. Both families are chemically different and provide unique health benefits.
Retinoids are important for immunity, managing inflammation, night vision, and red blood cell production. Retinoids are especially important during pregnancy, infancy and childhood years due to their role in genetics during these formative stages of human growth and development.*
Carotenoids have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Some carotenoid forms of vitamin A can be converted into retinoid forms in the body under the right conditions. These convertible provitamin carotenoids include alpha-carotene and beta-carotene.*
