EDTA (ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid) is often used in chelation therapy, in which foreign substances are removed from the body. Chelation may be employed to rid the body of circulating toxins including heavy metals such as lead, cadmium, and mercury.
Once in the bloodstream, the claw-like molecular structure of EDTA traps heavy metals and other toxins, forming a compound that can be excreted through the urine. Heavy metal build up has been associated with various health problems affecting the brain, heart, GI tract, and immune system.*
EDTA may help in the removal of mineral deposits that build up along the arteries of the cardiovascular system. Like fatty acid build up, accumulation of mineral deposits can lead to diminished artery health.*
There is concern that EDTA may also deplete the body of essential vitamins and minerals. If taking EDTA it may be wise to supplement with calcium, magnesium, iron, the B vitamins, and vitamin C, or a daily multivitamin.*
